Junior Human Rights Council
The Human Rights Council, established by the UN General Assembly in 2006, is a fundamental governmental body dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights in a global scale. It is made up of 47 member states that gather annually to address relevant and recurring human rights issues affecting several societies worldwide. These states work together with a shared interest and commitment of advancing human rights principles throughout the entirety of the world.
The council addresses a range of issues including gender inequality, minority rights, freedom of religion, and environmental rights, together with several others.
The Human Rights Council holds at least three regular sessions during a year, with each session lasting about 10 weeks. These sessions provide unique and unmatched opportunities for member states to generate global responses to current human rights crises. Additionally to such regular sessions, the council has the ability to host out-of-schedule sessions in order to address urgent situations requiring immediate attention.
The council’s meetings take place in Geneva, Switzerland, where the United Nations’ main human rights office is based on. The Human Rights Council plays a substantial role in shaping global human rights boundaries and responding to violations, making it a vital peace-generating platform.

Chairs
Head-Chair, Valentina Garcia
Hi delegates! My name is Valentina Garcia, and I am a sophomore at the British School Barra. I am thrilled to be the Head Chair of the Junior Human Rights Committee at this year’s RIOMUN IV alongside Jodie! As a member of the RIOMUN IV leadership team, I intend to mediate a knowledgeable and engaging debate where no delegates are afraid to speak up and contribute. The debate will encourage delegates to bring relevant worldwide perspectives on important topics to the table and absorb knowledge in a constructive manner. Such skills gathered in MUN can definitely carve an extremely successful and fulfilling academic journey where unique insights are granted, enriching this experience even more.
By partaking in several conferences, MUN has definitely grown into one of my greatest passions, where I have cultivated unforgettable memories and met amazing people. I hope that in this RioMun delegates can not only thrive in the debates but also make remarkable friendships and memories throughout the conference, just like I did! I am extremely excited and looking forward to meeting all of you in November. If you have any questions or doubts, don’t hesitate to contact me at 2026valentinagarcia@gmail
Vice-Chair, Jodie Davidson
Hi Everyone! My name is Jodie Davidson and I am a junior at the American School of Brasilia. I am delighted to be chair of the Junior Human Rights Council in RIOMUN IV. Even though I only started MUN fairly recently, I have discovered it to be a major passion of mine as I have always been interested in diplomacy and international relations. MUN has not only helped me get over my fear of public speaking but has changed me to be more confident overall as a person while creating amazing memories and connections with people. I'm thrilled to create a fun and positive environment where your delegates can have some engaging and lively debates on my committee. Outside of MUN, I love to watch movies, hang out with friends, or travel to new places around the world. I am so excited to work alongside Valentina and to make RIOMUN IV a memorable experience for you all! I can’t wait to meet you all in November and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at jodie.davidson26@gmail.com
