The Cambodian Genocide Committee
It's 1979. The dust has barely settled in Cambodia, who has just experienced one of the worst genocides in history, falling close behind the horrors of the Holocaust. The Khmer Rouge, a communist group who plunged the nation into a living nightmare with nearly a quarter of the population killed, were just overthrown, but the scars of their reign still run deep. After 4 years of isolation, brutality and unimaginable atrocities Cambodia is on the brink of collapse. Having just been declared independent from France and in the midst of the Cold War, Cambodia is also dealing with a very delicate geopolitical situation. The fate of Cambodia rests upon the delegates’ shoulders and the task is monumental. They will have to rebuild a nation just brought to shambles, seek justice for the victims, determine the fate of the Khmer Rouge, while also finding ways to prevent such a tragedy ever happening again. The world is watching with a mixture of horror and hope. The decisions made in this chamber will send a powerful message. Will Cambodia raise from the ashes and enter a new era of peace and justice, or be brought to their knees by the trauma and destruction caused by the genocide?

Head-Chair, Isabella Klein
Dear delegates and esteemed advisors, my name is Isabella Klien. I am a freshman at TBSRJ Urca and it will be an honor to chair this committee alongside Julie Bjoerkman. My MUN journey began as a shy delegate in online conferences, delivering small speeches and weakly defending my position. Since then MUN has given me a place to flourish and discover some of my passions, as well as meeting many new friends. I aim to create a space where delegates can flourish inside and outside the committee room. Outside of MUN, you can find me listening to my Spotify playlists, at ballet or reading on my Kindle. Please feel free to contact me with any doubts at isabellaklienmun@gmail.com. See you there!
Vice-Chair, Julie Bjorekman
Dear delegates,
My name is Julie Bjorkmann and I am super excited to be chairing the special committee at this edition of Rio MUN. I am currently a senior at Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro at the Gávea site. I have only been part of MUN for a year, but it has already been full of amazing experiences and lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Every single conference I have attended has been an amazing experience and I hope to make this conference the same for you all! MUN has taught me to be confident, have faith in myself and develop strong arguments to support a cause, which are all extremely important skills. It has also been a great opportunity to expand my network and make friends with people across schools. Outside of MUN, I am a STEM girl at heart, enjoying all the sciences, but especially physics and chemistry, in addition to liking both soccer and reading. I am beyond excited to be chairing a special committee as it always provides creativity, surprises and twists you are unable to find in any other committee. I can’t wait to see all your exciting, creative and hopefully surprising ideas during this conference, and I am confident we will all have a great time. Remember to have fun! If you have any questions about the committee or the procedure in itself do not hesitate to reach out to me at jubjo06@gmail.com.
See you all soon!
