Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council was established in 2006 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, it was created to replace the Commission on Human Rights which was criticized for being ineffective at addressing human rights abuses worldwide. The Human Rights Council aims to tackle Human Rights issues and violations and advocating for the rights stated in the UDHR(Universal Declaration On Human Rights).

The council is composed of 47 member seats which are elected on three-year terms by the General Assembly, however there may be observer states who cannot vote but can represent their points of view.  The UNHRC’s main responsibility is to propose solutions to and enquire into specific cases of human rights violations.

Chairs

Head Chair, Sofia Fichman

Hi everyone! I’m Sofia Fichman, a senior at the Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro. I am beyond thrilled to be the head chair for the Human Rights Council at RIOMUN. I’ve been doing MUN since my second week of 9th grade and even though it hasn’t been without its trials and tribulations, that’s a decision I’ll never have to look back on. Outside of MUN I absolutely love reading and watching TV shows. I love theatre and am devoted to anything Shakespeare. Some of my favorite books are If We Were Villains and Carry On. As for TV shows, I love Game of Thrones, Rick and Morty, Big Mouth, and you will find me rewatching The Office whenever I need to avoid pending school work. I’m preparing this committee alongside my wonderful co-chair Fernanda and I hope you love it as much as I do. I can’t wait to meet you all and have the best time in RIOMUN! If you have any doubts or concerns or just want to introduce yourself, don’t hesitate to email me at sofia.c.fichman@gmail.com
